Getting started
Frequently asked
Nothing is underlined. What is wrong?
On the Mac, this is almost always the Accessibility permission. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Schreibly is switched on. Without it the app cannot see the text field at all. Also check that you are signed in, that the app you are typing in is not on your ignored list, and that the field is not a password field — those are never read.
Which languages does Schreibly check?
English (US) and German (Germany). Both are first-class: each is checked against its own spelling and usage. Other languages are not supported yet, and text in an unsupported language is better left unchecked than checked badly.
Why is the Mac app not in the Mac App Store?
Because the App Store requires every app to run in Apple’s sandbox, and a sandboxed app is not allowed to read the text field of another application — which is the one thing Schreibly does. So it is distributed directly from this site, signed and notarised by Apple, and it opens like any other app.
Does my text leave my device?
English and German spelling run entirely on your own device and are never sent anywhere. The deeper checks — grammar, punctuation, context and style — go over an encrypted connection to Schreibly’s servers, and from there to the AI infrastructure that runs our models under a data processing agreement. Those servers are spread across data centres in Germany and the United States, chosen by capacity, speed and price, so your text can leave the EEA while it is being checked. That is the one thing to know; everything else is a no. Your text is held in memory only for the check: never stored, never logged, never used to train any model, never sold, never shared for advertising, never used to profile you. Your name, email address and account id are not sent with it. Business and enterprise plans with a data processing agreement are coming soon. Our privacy policy states all of this in full.
Schreibly does not work in my browser on the Mac.
That is deliberate. The Mac app skips web browsers entirely, because the browser extension already covers them and two correction layers on one text box help nobody. Install the extension for browser writing.
Will the Mac app tell me when there is a new version?
Not yet. Version 1.0.0 has no automatic update check, so new releases are announced on the download page. You can install a new version straight over the old one — nothing is lost.
How do I uninstall it?
On the Mac: drag Schreibly from Applications to the Trash, then remove it from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. In the browser: remove the extension from your browser’s extensions page. Nothing else is left behind.
Does Schreibly cost anything?
Schreibly has a free tier and a paid one. The free tier is genuinely free and needs no card: the spelling check that runs on your own device is unlimited, and a monthly allowance of AI actions covers the rest. Schreibly Plus raises that allowance and unlocks the deeper checks. The plans page has the current price and the current figures.
